Natural and Lab Grown Diamond Comparison
What is the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond?

The primary difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond is their point of origin. A natural diamond is formed (naturally) under ground in an uncontrolled environment. This means that there are a finite number of natural diamonds, which make them rare. Lab grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds but are grown in a controlled laboratory environment. This means that they can be grown on demand.

Are natural diamonds worth more than lab-grown diamonds?

While natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties, the rarity of a natural diamond is what truly sets the two apart from each other. Natural diamonds are finite and rare whereas with lab-grown diamonds there is no limit to how many more can be grown in the future. This can ultimately impact the value of a lab-grown diamond overtime.

Is there a visual difference in a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond?

There is no visual difference to the naked eye between a natural diamond and lab-grown diamond. They all have varying types of color, clarity, size and shapes and score a 10/10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The only way to tell the difference between a natural diamond and lab-grown diamond is with specialized equipment.

How should I decide which one is right for me?

As mentioned, there are multiple factors to consider when selecting a diamond. If you are drawn to the rarity of a diamond and the value that it holds overtime, a natural diamond may be for you. If the price / size of the stone or sustainability are most important to you, a lab-grown diamond may be for you.

Is a Moissanite a diamond?
